The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has disclosed that Ghana is expecting about 13,000 participants in the 2023 African Games.
The 13,000 participants according to the minister, include athletes, volunteers, technical officers and special guests.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, March 4, 2024, he said that all the 13,000 participants, will be taking care of by Ghana in terms of accommodation, feeding, transportation, and medical care, among others.
“The 13th African Games is expected to attract 13,000 participants and that is, over 5000 athletes, 3000 volunteers, 3000 technical officers like medics, physiotherapists and others and 2000 official guests. So in total, we are expecting 13,000 participants,” he explained.
“I mentioned earlier that we are expecting 13,000 participants. Most of the athletes will be housed at the games village but when it comes to men’s and women’s football, we are still going to get them hotels and it’s the responsibility of the host nation. Unlike AFCON where CAF will pay for accommodation for countries participating, in the African Games, it’s the host nation that provides accommodation for the countries.”
He added that about 2 billion TV, radio and other virtual platforms are expected around the world to follow the games.
“In addition, we are expecting over 2 billion spectators to participate TV, radio and other virtual platforms around the globe,” he said.
The games, which is Ghana’s first time hosting, will be held from March 8 to March 23, 2024.
