The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed the arrest of 14 people, including teachers, students, and invigilators, for alleged involvement in malpractice in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The arrests were made at various centres, including Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, and Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS.

WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, told journalists on Friday that the number could rise as investigations progress, adding that results from the affected schools will face extra scrutiny.

One of the most serious cases occurred at Adventist Day Senior High School in Kumasi, where invigilators seized several mobile phones from candidates. The centre was subsequently closed, and students were relocated to WAEC’s regional office to continue their papers under strict supervision.

Mr. Kapi also confirmed that two impersonators arrested in Kasoa were sentenced to six months in prison each, while an accomplice received an eight-month jail term.

In Kukurantumi, a school proprietor and a teacher were arrested for allegedly operating a WhatsApp group to share exam questions. At Abura Dunkwa, a candidate identified as Ebenezer Fynn was arrested for impersonation and is assisting police with investigations.

Kapi stressed that WAEC will not relent in its efforts to safeguard the integrity of the exams, assuring that strict measures will remain in place to deter malpractice.
