At least 15 people have been killed and around 18 others injured when Lisbon’s Gloria funicular railway derailed and crashed, emergency services say. Five of the injured are in serious condition, the National Institute for Medical Emergencies said.
The cause of the crash is not immediately known, local media said. It reportedly occurred at the start of the evening rush hour, around 6 p.m. The yellow-and-white electric streetcar, known as Gloria, can carry more than 40 people. It is commonly used by Lisbon residents as well as tourists.
Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas told reporters at the scene, “Lisbon is in mourning.” He added, “This was a tragic accident. It’s a tragedy of the like we’ve never seen.”
