Police have released 15 out of the people who were arrested on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, for disturbances at the University of Ghana.

Following a violent confrontation between the Police and some persons yesterday at the Legon campus over accommodation issues, the police arrested 18 people in connection with disturbances.

The Police on Tuesday, 14th February 2023 arrested 18 people for disturbances on the University of Ghana campus.

The 18 suspects were together with about 200 others believed to be former members of the Commonwealth Hall of the university,” a police statement said.

However, it is reported that 15 out of the 18 who were arrested have been released from police custody whiles efforts are being made for the other three to be released.

Due to the university management’s recent residential policy, which resulted in the revocation of the residential status of students residing in Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall in December, some students were able to obtain an interlocutory injunction on January 6, 2023, preventing the university administration from enforcing the residential policy.

It is on the back of this that some of the students returned to the hall on Tuesday, which led to the clash.
