The Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation (MoCD) and its agencies has kick-started this year’s Trainer of Trainers in Sefwi-Wiawso Municipality in the Western North Region on Tuesday, 17th of August 2021 as part of the bi-annual National Girls in ICT Celebrations.

In all, 100 teachers will benefit from the training. They will in turn train a thousand girls (1000) from ten (10) selected districts in the region.

These include Sefwi Wiawso; Juaboso; Bodi; Akontombra; Suaman; Aowim; Bia East; Bia West; Prestea Huni Valley and Bibiani Awianso Bekwai.

The Girls-in-ICT initiative is one of the flagship programmes of the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation and is in line with the International Girls-in-ICT Day, an initiative backed by all ITU Member States, and aims at encouraging and empowering girls and young women to consider studies and careers in the growing field of ICTs, enabling both girls and technology companies to reap the benefits of greater female participation in the ICT sector.

As part of the training, a brief tour and inspection of the training centres was carried out by the Ministry and the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC).

In a short ceremony to open the training, Mr Selorm Dzokoto, the Regional Manager for GIFEC, said Girls-in-ICT is a program organised to train girls in ICT, especially in coding, to whip up their interest in the current ICT world, adding that girls who will perform well in the training would be selected and given certificates and receive awards for the establishment of an ultramodern ICT laboratory to provide more room for such schools to advance their skills in ICT.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Louis Owusu Agyapong advised the trainers to take the training seriously since it represents a good opportunity to grow their knowledge base and help improve the job skills of the girls they are going to train.

Training of the Girls starts from 30th August to 10th September; district competitions takes place from 4th to 11th September. The event will be climaxed on the 15th of September 2021.

All thousand girls will be awarded with a certificate of participation. The schools of the first ten (10) girls would be given ICT Laboratories. The first hundred girls would be given laptops and the first three girls get cash prices and plaques.

In attendance were the District Education Director, Mr Stephen Kwaku Owusu; Staff of Kofi Annan Center of Excellence; Staff of GIFEC and Staff of the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation (MoCD)
