The Atlas lion of Morocco have reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time after beating Spain 3-0 on penalties.
The North African side being the only African nation left in the tournament were never in doubt to go far in Qatar after beating Belgium and topping their group in the group stages.
After a brilliant performance against Belgium, Morocco were paired with Spain, one of the high-flying teams at the tournament.
The game began with an end-to-end action with both teams looking to break each other down in the early stages but ended goalless in the first half.
Morocco looked like the favourites to score in the second half but Unai Simon, the Spanish goalkeeper kept his side in the game till the end.
Both teams were resolute in defense pushing the game into extra time and after 120 minutes of football, the winner had to be decided on penalties.
The Moroccan keeper was the hero of the day as he saved two out of three penalties to send his side into the last eight.
Morocco become the fourth African country to qualify for the quarter-finals after Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana reached the last eight in previous editions.
The Atlas Lions will face the winners of the last round of 16 games between Portugal and Switzerland.
