2023 African Games: Black Satellites reach final after tough win over Senegal

Ghana's U-20 men's national team, the Black Satellites, booked their place in the final of the 2023 African Games on Tuesday night after they secured a narrow victory over Senegal in the semi-final at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana’s U-20 men’s national team, the Black Satellites, booked their place in the final of the 2023 African Games on Tuesday night after they secured a narrow victory over Senegal in the semi-final at the Accra Sports Stadium.

It was a frustrating night for the Satellites after they dominated most of the game in the first half but failed to take the lead to end goalless at the break.

After the break, the Satellites continued their search for the lead but were hampered by Senegal’s formidable defense.

However, Ghana took the deserved lead in the 83rd minute after substitute Michael Ephson calmly slotted in a cross from Jerry Afriyie.

It all started when Ghana’s goalkeeper Saeed Yakubu sent a long ball into the left side of the pitch for a blistering chase by Jerry Afriyie, who outran his defender and found Ephson, who was waiting for the pass to put the ball into the net.

The victory sets the stage for Ghana to face Uganda in the final on Friday, March 22 at the Accra Sports after they also defeated Congo 4-2 in their semi-final game.

Head coach of the Black Satellites, Desmond Ofei and his men will look to win gold for Ghana for the first time since 2013.
