The Black Meteors defeated Congo in their opening group A match in the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday afternoon, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
It was a fierce contest between the two sides, as the game produced five goals, with all coming in the second half.
The Congolese were more comfortable in the first half, as they had 58% of possession against Ghana’s 42%.
After the break, coach Ibrahim Tanko made two quick changes, bringing on Emmanuel Yeboah to replace captain, Daniel Afriyie Barnieh and Ibrahim Hafiz, who also replaced Sylvester Simba.
Four minutes into the second half, Ernest Nuamah gave Ghana the lead, tapping in a fine low cross from substitute Emmanuel Yeboah whose impact was immediately felt.
Fatawu Issahaku nearly doubled Ghana’s lead in the 63rd minute with a long range effort from the center line, which hit the crossbar after Congo’s goalkeeper, Dhody Bissila was caught off his line.
Emmanuel Yeboah then added the second for Ghana on the 75th minute with a well composed finished after a long pass that broke Congo’s defensive line.
With a man of the match performance, Yeboah got the brace with another goal from a penalty spot, just eight minutes to the end of 90 minutes.
Congo, however, got back into the game, scoring two in one minute, with the goals coming in the 92nd and 93rd minutes.
Ghana’s next game is on Tuesday against host nation Morocco.
