Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu has called on the Speaker of Parliament to summon the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa to appear before the House to update members on its readiness and state on biometric devices ahead of the December 7 polls.
With just 94 days to the 2024 general elections, the immediate past Minority Leader on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday September 3, 2024 mentioned that the EC has about 75,000 biometric devices which will be used come December 7 which according to him would have to be subjected to some technical audit prior to the elections.
Haruna argued that, the irregularities witnessed during the just ended voter exhibition exercise must be a wake up call for members of the House and the general public to know how prepared the EC is to conduct the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
“There is a happening in my Tamale South Constituency of easy transfer of voters from from Tamale South to Pusiga, I pray it is not on a large scale that would affect other constituencies. But maybe the committee in charge of the Electoral Commission or your good self may want to invite the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission”, he said.
The Tamale South lawmaker further noted that, the Commission must provide an update on the state of the devices, conditions of batteries and adapters.
“Mr Speaker, my information is that the EC would have to recheck all the batteries because you don’t need a situation where on elections day, we are told that we should transit to manual system. We want the system to work. The functionality and efficacy of its batteries are important”, Haruna Iddrisu stressed.
Haruna Iddrisu was adding his voice to concerns raised by Minority leader, Ato Forson on the credibility of the voters register stating that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would not accept the national voters register compiled by the Electoral Commission.
