The Electoral Commission (EC) will on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, release the Provisional Voter Register (PVR) to political parties ahead of the 2024 general elections.
An earlier statement released by the EC on July 3 rescheduled the exercise to take place from 20th to 27th of August 2024 following a revision of various dates for activities by the commission.
Meanwhile an advocacy group, Election Watch Ghana, on Monday, August 19, gathered at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission (EC), demanding the immediate release of the Provisional Voter Register (PVR) to political parties.
Prior to the call from Election Watch Ghana, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other stakeholders raised concerns over the delay in publishing the provisional voter register.
The NDC argue that the delay on the part of the EC is an act of incompetence and a deliberate attempt to provide a sub-standard register to political parties.
However, the EC’s director of training, Dr. Serebuor Quaicoe, explained, that the Commission is legally required to compile the provisional register within 90 days after the data collection from the registration process.
“If you look at regulation 22 of the C1 91, they say that the commission has 90 days to compile the provisional register after gathering the data or doing the registration and we all know that technically we’ve seen the data gathering which was on the 3rd.”
The Commission has however assured all political parties and the general public of publishing the register at the appropriate time.
