The Grand Finale of the 2024 Statistical-Data Hackathon is currently underway in Accra, showcasing innovative solutions that leverage data-driven evidence through advanced technologies, analytical methods, and user-friendly platforms.
The event draws on the rich datasets available from the Statistical Online Bank (StatsBank).
Spanning three days, the competition aims to address the cyclical challenges impacting Ghana’s development trajectory.
Six technical universities—Accra, Koforidua, Takoradi, Sunyani, Bolgatanga, and Wa Technical Universities—are participating in the event.
During the opening ceremony, Dr. Kobina Abaka Ansah, Assistant Chief Statistician at the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), highlighted the underutilization of existing data.
“Too often, data remains untouched, failing to reach its full potential. This initiative promotes the practical use of data already collected to develop impactful solutions,” Dr. Ansah said.
He emphasized the importance of aligning academic outputs with industry demands, adding that the initiative encourages students to use StatsBank data and other resources to create products addressing real-world needs.
The project, funded in part by the Danish government, recently saw Ghanaian students present their innovative solutions on an international platform during African Statistics Day.
Dr. Francis Kweku Siripi, National Coordinator of the Statistical-Data Hackathon, announced that the top three winners would receive cash prizes of GHS20,000, GHS15,000, and GHS10,000, respectively.
All participants will also be recognized with medals.
Dr. Siripi praised the creativity of participating students, who have developed numerous products with potential to tackle pressing national challenges.
“Many of these products, once refined, can provide tangible solutions to the country’s most critical issues,” he noted, urging participants to collaborate and deliver impactful solutions within a 36-hour time frame.
The event underscores the role of data in driving innovation and shaping Ghana’s development path, fostering a stronger connection between academia and industry.
