During the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy presentation, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson highlighted the Accra-Kumasi Expressway as a flagship project of the government’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme.
He described it as Ghana’s first modern six-lane, bi-directional Class A expressway, linking the nation’s capital to the Ashanti Region via the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.
“Stretching 198.7 kilometers, the new alignment reduces the current travel distance from 250 kilometers to 198.7 kilometers and is expected to halve travel time between Accra and Kumasi,” Dr. Forson told Parliament.
The project is projected to reduce transport costs by nearly 40 percent and create over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction. Beyond improving mobility, the expressway is expected to stimulate industrial parks, logistics hubs, and service economies along its route, boosting Ghana’s 24-hour economy and national competitiveness.
Features of the Expressway
Eight major interchanges to ease urban congestion at Accra Hub, Adeiso, Asamankese, Akyem Oda, Ofoase, Lake Bosomtwe, and Kumasi.
Three major bridges spanning the Birim and Pra Rivers.
Four full-service areas at Asamankese, Ayirebi, Ofoase, and Lake Bosomtwe, with fuel stations, rest stops, restaurants, vehicle repair centres, and emergency medical facilities for 24-hour operations.
Two modern 20-lane toll plazas at Accra and Kumasi equipped with automated systems for efficient revenue collection.
Dr. Forson also highlighted the Adawso-Ekye Amanfrom Bridge and related road networks, which will unlock the agricultural and economic potential of the Afram Plains, enabling large-scale commercial farming.
“This infrastructure is not just about roads; it is about transforming mobility, industrial growth, and regional connectivity across Ghana,” the Finance Minister said.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is a cornerstone of the government’s infrastructure agenda, set to improve travel efficiency, create jobs, and drive economic growth across multiple sectors.
