A drone strike on a crowded market in Sudan’s West Kordofan state has killed at least 28 people and left dozens more injured, according to a local rights group, in one of the latest deadly attacks in the country’s ongoing civil war.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in the town of Ghubaysh during peak trading hours, when civilians were gathering to buy food and essential supplies.

The Emergency Lawyers Sudan said the market was struck while it was heavily populated, leaving many casualties and widespread panic. The group accused the Sudanese army of carrying out the attack.

Medical workers reported that at least 25 of the injured remain in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll could rise further.

The market is a key economic hub for residents across West Kordofan and surrounding areas, providing essential goods in a region increasingly cut off by shifting frontlines.

Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, following a power struggle between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The RSF currently controls much of West Kordofan, a strategically important region bordering Darfur that contains key oil facilities and supply routes.

The war has led to repeated attacks on civilian areas, with humanitarian groups warning of worsening conditions and growing risks for non-combatants trapped in the conflict.
