The Police Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team has arrested three persons for allegedly impersonating the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and other prominent personalities on social media to defraud unsuspecting victims.
The suspects were picked up at Dabala and Sogakope in the Volta Region following a sustained intelligence-led operation by the Police. Investigations indicate that the suspects used fake social media accounts bearing the names and images of high-profile public officials to lure victims into various fraudulent schemes.
Police sources say the suspects are believed to be involved in multiple cyber-related crimes, including mobile money (MoMo) fraud, credit card fraud, airtime sales fraud, and online sales scams carried out across different social media platforms.
The suspects have been identified as Gideon Awudi, 25; Edem Soku, 33; and Judith Soku, 31. Their arrest followed weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering within Sogakope, Dabala, Dzodze, and Penyi, all in the Volta Region.
According to the Police, the suspects are currently in custody and are assisting with investigations to help unravel the full extent of their operations, including possible accomplices and victims.
The Ghana Police Service has cautioned the public to remain vigilant when interacting with individuals online, especially those claiming to represent high-ranking public officials, and has urged citizens to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through official Police communication channels.
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
