The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has confirmed that the Attorney-General’s Department is prosecuting three suspects linked to the 2020 election-related violence in the Odododiodio constituency.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Mr. Muntaka said the election, while highly competitive and marked by strong voter turnout, was marred by violent incidents resulting in fatalities and injuries.
Investigations revealed that although the direct perpetrators of the deaths of Rita Otoo and Emmanuel Dompreh could not be identified, three individuals who fired into crowds, causing injuries, have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. They are set to stand trial at the High Court, Criminal Court 1, Accra.
Mr. Muntaka also noted that security personnel were implicated in some deaths: four fatalities were linked to armed police patrols, and three to military intervention during attempts to control violent crowds. Additionally, clashes between party supporters caused five deaths, while two individuals were lynched in separate confrontations.
Through witness statements, forensic analyses, and crime scene reconstructions, 21 suspects have been identified, resulting in 11 new case dockets. So far, four suspects are on police bail, five are on remand, and warrants have been issued for the rest.
The Interior Minister added that the Task Force investigating the violence has recommended monetary compensation for the families of the deceased, with compensation for the injured contingent on court outcomes.
