The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old trader, Amidu Mohammed, for unlawful possession of dangerous drugs and an unlicensed firearm at Sabon Zongo, a suburb of Accra.
The arrest followed a tip-off received by the Accra Regional Intelligence Team, which led officers to identify Amidu, who operates a shop in the area, as a suspected dealer in restricted pharmaceutical substances.
Briefing the media today at the Accra Regional Police Headquarters, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Duuti Tuaruka, disclosed that the suspect admitted to having some drugs in his possession and confirmed that he had earlier sold a quantity to an individual in the community.
“A team was swiftly dispatched to Sabon Zongo, where the suspect was located and arrested. Upon searching his premises, the team discovered quantities of prescription-only and restricted drugs,” DCOP Tuaruka stated.
The substances retrieved included Tramico 225, Tramaking 225, Tafrodol 225—commonly known on the streets as “RED” or Wo Nim Red?—as well as Diazepam 10, popularly called Blue-Blue or Valium 10.
In addition to the drugs, police also discovered a pump-action firearm concealed in a sack inside the suspect’s shop. When questioned, the suspect claimed ownership of the drugs but denied knowledge of the firearm, alleging that it had been left there by an unknown individual whose identity he could not confirm.
Amidu Mohammed has since been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court on two charges:
Possession of Dangerous Drugs, contrary to Section 38 of the Pharmacy Act, 1994 (Act 489)
Possession of a Firearm Without Lawful Authority, contrary to Section 192 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29)
