The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old woman, Mavis Nkrumah, for allegedly dousing her ex-boyfriend with a substance suspected to be acid during a late-night encounter at Abeka Fan Milk, a suburb of Accra.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, has left the victim, 29-year-old taxi driver Gideon Frimpong, with serious burn injuries.

According to preliminary police investigations, Mavis appeared uninvited at Gideon’s residence around 1:00 a.m. and requested he drive her home. The two, who had reportedly ended their relationship, engaged in a brief conversation before Gideon agreed to offer her a ride.

While driving through the Ofankor “7-Days Stretch,” Gideon reportedly asked Mavis to alight due to the poor condition of the road ahead. It was at that moment—after a short discussion about their breakup—that Mavis allegedly retrieved a container and poured its contents, believed to be acid, on him.

Bystanders quickly came to the victim’s aid and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment and has since been discharged.

After the attack, Mavis fled the scene and reportedly attempted to leave the country. However, police intelligence led to her arrest on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. She is currently in police custody and assisting investigators with the case.

Confirming the arrest, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs at the Accra Regional Police Command, stated:

“The suspect attempted to flee to a neighbouring country but was apprehended following coordinated efforts by our officers. She is being held as investigations continue.”

Supt. Obeng further urged the public to seek lawful means of resolving disputes.

“The Command cautions the public against taking the law into their own hands. Acts of violence are criminal and punishable by law. We encourage anyone facing domestic or relationship-related issues to seek peaceful and legal channels of resolution.”

The police have assured the public of their commitment to justice and continue to urge citizens to report suspicious or threatening behaviour promptly to the nearest police station.
