The Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has stated that government through the Education Ministry is building 334 Senior High Schools with 40-seater Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory.

This initiative, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said is to main stream the teaching and learning of ICT through practical means adding that the new curriculum has an ICT component which requires practical instructions to make the lesson more adoptive.

“I am already having a talk with the Ministry of Education even though not every school has an ICT lab and not every school can have one, we are in the process of providing 334 SHSs with 40-seater ICT labs across the country,” she stated.

The minister who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West Constituency in the Greater Accra Region made this known on Tuesday April 12, 2022 during the commissioning of 15 classroom blocks for St. Magaret Mary Senior High School at Dansoman SSNIT and Akweibu Basic School also in Dansoman.

She said Ghana Investment Fund For Electronic Communications GIFEC is also constructing Community ICT Centers in locations outside the schools or on school compounds which are open to the students. All this she said is aimed at praticalising the study of ICT.

The MP revealed further that as part of Girls in ICT initiative, this year alone the ministry is training 5000 girls in ICT in five regions.

“We are doing 1000 in the North East Region and in each region, additional 100 teachers are trained in ICT so that even after the end of the programme, they will be given laptops or the schools whose students excel during the programme get ICT labs.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful indicated that ever since she became an MP, has spent more on education than any other area in the municipality.

She stated that education is the key to transforming lives revealing that her life transformed from a charcoal seller to a lawyer and eventually to an MP and called on the students to take advantage of the facilities to enhance their knowledge and skills development.
