This year, 34 prisoners from Ghana’s Prisons Service participated in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E.), a crucial test for transitioning from junior high school to senior high schools or technical institutions.

The candidates, all male, comprised 27 juveniles from the Senior Correctional Centre, 5 from Nsawam Maximum Security Prison, and 2 from Sunyani Central Prison.

Ghana Prisons Service prioritizes rehabilitation through education. Inmates are prepared by qualified teachers from both the service and the Ghana Education Service.

Greater Accra Regional Public Relations Officer, DSP Loretta Valentina Amoah, expressed optimism for the inmates’ success and highlighted challenges like limited teaching materials.

She appealed to the public for donations like textbooks and past questions to enhance learning.

The inmates acknowledged their teachers’ efforts and expressed confidence in their preparation.

Ghana Prisons Service’s commitment to reformation is evident in its introduction of formal education in 2007.

This initiative equips inmates with basic literacy skills and certificates to aid reintegration upon release.

The program has yielded impressive results. Since 2009, inmates have consistently achieved a 100% pass rate, with last year recording 51 successful participants.
