The 37 Military Hospital has announced that it will embark on a mass burial exercise on Friday, September 1, 2023.
According to the hospital, the bodies to be buried will include identified but unclaimed and unidentified bodies.
A statement released and signed by the Director General of Public Relations of the institution, A Marteye Lieutenant Colonel on August 2, 2023, indicated that due to the development, the hospital’s mortuary is now overcrowded, adding that it had not embarked on such exercise since 2017.
“The 37 Military Hospital would like to bring to the attention of the general public a pending mass burial exercise for identified but unclaimed as well as unidentified bodies at the hospital’s morgue.
“The continued storage of these unclaimed bodies causes congestion in the mortuary and affects efficiency in its day-to-day operation. It must be noted that the last time the hospital conducted mass was on 11 March, 2017,” the statement read.
Relatives of the unclaimed bodies are, however, urged to visit the hospital to assist in identifying the bodies before the exercise begins.
“Pending the mass burial exercise on Friday, September 1, 2023, the general public is being urged to assist in identifying the bodies. The relatives of the unclaimed bodies are requested to visit the Department of Anatomical Pathology of the 37 Hospital from Thursday, August 3, to August 31, 2023, to claim the bodies.”
