St. Paul’s Senior High School (SPACO) in Denu is set to host the 3rd edition of ORMI VOLTA STEM Fair under the theme: “Developing Future Engineers Today.”
The event will bring together many participating schools, showcasing their projects. The Science, Technology, and Engineering fair was held on Friday and Saturday, July 5-6, 2024, in Denu, Volta region.
The programme is part of a broader initiative by the Opportunity and Risk Management Institute (ORMI) under its Corporate Social Responsibility programme. It aims to uncover and nurture the hidden talents of today’s youth.
The event seeks to stimulate the ingenuity of Ghana’s future leaders by encouraging them to translate their theoretical knowledge into tangible products. This approach aims to solve community and national problems, improve living standards, create jobs, and enhance the learning experience for both students and teachers.
ORMI has taken it upon itself to bring these talented children into the spotlight, encouraging and assisting them in showcasing their abilities to the world. The event aims to identify children with raw talents from both junior high schools and senior high schools.
The organizers expect this year’s fair to surpass previous editions, with participation from various industry players who will help identify and recognize these future inventors. The third edition of the Science, Technology, and Engineering fair aims to be a game-changer, inspiring children to break through limitations and setbacks.
One of the key objectives of this event is to instil in children the belief that they can create something today that will positively impact their future. It is rare to see many African children gaining recognition in Technology, Science, and Engineering, and this event aims to change that.
The maiden event was held in April 2022 at Abor Senior High School with eight participating schools. Students from Aborsco, Tsiamesco, Dzosec, Avenorsec, Afiasec, Spaco, Abor EP, and Abor RC Basic Schools had the opportunity to showcase their talents.
The second edition took place in April 2023 at Abor Senior High School, featuring 65 projects and 134 students from both junior and senior high schools in the Volta region. The overall winner received a laptop, the second-place winner received a Samsung tablet, and the third-place winner also received a tablet. Awards were given in both junior and senior categories.
This year’s fair will feature 19 schools, divided into junior and senior categories. The first-place winners in both categories will receive laptops, while the second and third-place winners will receive tablets. There will also be consolation prizes for other outstanding projects. The event will host 80 student inventors showcasing 38 projects.
The main sponsor for this event is the Opportunity and Risk Management Institute (ORMI), headquartered in Accra. There are opportunities for other partners or sponsors to join and support the event.
The organizers are appealing to industries involved in Technology, Science, and Engineering to engage with these projects and support further research and development, contributing to community development and the students’ careers.
