The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has raised concerns about the accuracy of the reported number of beneficiaries under Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) program.
According to Mr. Iddrisu, his analysis of data from 2017 to 2023 indicates a discrepancy in the figures.
“I am not claiming that my figures are definitive, but the reported figure of 5.1 million appears misleading. My analysis suggests the actual number of beneficiaries does not exceed 3.9 million,” he stated.
He emphasized the need for validation of the data as a matter of urgency, clarifying that his intention was not to discredit previous records but to establish a reliable baseline for informed policy decisions.
As part of his broader agenda to revamp the education sector, Mr. Iddrisu announced plans to organize a National Education Conference aimed at evaluating the state of Ghana’s education system and formulating actionable reforms to address current challenges.
