The Chief Executive Officer of Buffer Stock Company, Alhaji Hanan Abdul-Wahab, has revealed that government has completed the construction of some 60 Warehouses across the country.
According to Mr. Abdul-Wahab, the project, which form part of government’s one district, one warehouse initiative, is intended to reduce post-harvest losses.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, August 21, 2023, he said the vision of government is to through Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ), increase production and store the excesses.
“We have rehabilitated dilapidated food distribution warehouses cross the country in Tamale, Yendi, Sunyani, Badu and other places that we have the food distribution warehouses.
“We have realized that we still have a lot gap when it comes to storage because when you put together the total tonnage, it’s woefully inadequate as compared to our vision, the PFJ, how we want to increase production and by so doing, be able to mop up excess grains from farmers, process and keep in our various warehouses. So with this rehabilitated warehouses, it was clear to us that we needed a lot more warehouses to be able to achieve this programme.”
He continued by saying that phase one of the project is almost at completion stage.
“So far, the phase one of the project, Ministry of Food and Agriculture awarded 30 of such warehouses to be constructed, the former ministry for special development initiative, also awarded 50 of such warehouses to be constructed.
As I stand before you, about 60 of such warehouses are completed and ready for use. This is to boost the warehouse capacity so that we will be able to achieve the goals that we have set for ourselves to reduce post harvest losses as a result of poor or lack of storage facilities.”
In 2017, government launched the one district, one warehouse initiative, with the intention of constructing 1,000 metric tonne-capacity warehouses in each of the 216 districts.
