Eight persons lost their lives while five others sustained injuries in a deadly collision between a Mercedes-Benz and a Hino truck at Kormantse, near Saltpond, on the Accra–Cape Coast highway.
The accident occurred in the early hours of the morning, leaving several families in shock and distress.
Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, confirmed that the Mankessim fire rescue team was dispatched at about 3:50 a.m. to the accident scene.
He explained that some occupants had managed to escape with the help of passers-by, while the team extricated two others trapped inside the vehicle, who were already dead.
Mr. Hudu further noted that with the support of other agencies, the stretch was cleared and reopened to motorists.
He emphasized that investigations by the Ghana Police Service are underway to determine the cause of the crash, which has once again highlighted the dangers on the country’s busy highways.
