The 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic has been inaugurated in a historic session following the dissolution of the 8th Parliament at midnight on January 6, 2025.

The ceremony marked the beginning of a new legislative term, with Members of Parliament (MPs) taking their oaths of office and leadership positions being filled.

In accordance with constitutional requirements, the session commenced with the election of a Speaker to preside over parliamentary proceedings for the next four years.

The house unanimously elected Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament.

The Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Araba Torkonoo Sackey, administered the oath of office to Hon. Bagbin, officially swearing him in as Speaker.

Following his swearing-in, Speaker Bagbin led the Members of Parliament-elect in reciting the Oath of Allegiance and the Parliamentary Oath, officially confirming them as representatives of the house.

The first sitting also saw the election of the Deputy Speakers. Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, the MP for Akatsi South, was nominated by the Majority caucus and seconded by the Minority caucus. The House approved his nomination, making him the First Deputy Speaker of the 9th Parliament.

Similarly, the Minority leadership nominated Hon. Andrews Asiamah Amoako, MP for Fomena, as the Second Deputy Speaker. His nomination was seconded by the Majority caucus, and he was duly approved by the House.

The inauguration of the 9th Parliament marks the start of a new legislative term expected to address pressing national issues and foster collaboration between the Majority and Minority caucuses.

Speaker Bagbin pledged to uphold the principles of fairness and inclusivity in steering the affairs of the house.
