The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to ensuring journalist safety and fostering collaboration with the media as part of preparations for the December 2024 General Elections.

This pledge was made during a stakeholder engagement session held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the Police Headquarters in Accra.

The session, organized by the National Election Security Taskforce, brought together senior journalists, editors, and members of the Police Management Board.

Led by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and the Commissioner of Police (COP), Mr. Mohammed Fuseini Suraji, the engagement emphasized the importance of cooperation in securing a peaceful electoral process.

In his welcome address, COP Suraji highlighted the necessity of meeting with key stakeholders to exchange ideas and address security concerns.

“This engagement is part of a series of strategic initiatives the Police Service has undertaken since the beginning of the year to ensure a smooth and peaceful election.

As Chairperson of the National Election Security Taskforce, it is imperative to collaborate with stakeholders to maintain peace during this crucial period,” he stated.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, further underscored the critical role of the media in democracy, assuring journalists of a safe environment to operate without fear or intimidation.

“The media is a key stakeholder in this year’s elections, and it is our duty as a law enforcement agency to ensure that journalists can work without fear, intimidation, or interference,” he affirmed.

Proactive Measures for Journalist Safety

To bolster media safety during the elections, the IGP announced the deployment of media liaison officers to newsrooms across the country.

These officers will serve as direct points of contact for addressing security concerns.

Additionally, toll-free emergency lines, established in partnership with telecommunication companies, will be available for journalists and the public to report incidents or request assistance promptly.

The Police Service also reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing consultations with media organisations to ensure a coordinated approach to election security.

Dr. Dampare urged journalists to uphold professionalism, emphasizing the importance of accurate and balanced reporting while warning against misinformation and disinformation that could incite unrest.

“We must work together to ensure this election is remembered for peace, security, and order,” he said, adding that all stakeholders have a role to play in preserving Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.

Stakeholder Reactions

Editors and senior media practitioners commended the Police for their proactive measures and expressed optimism about the safer working environment promised for journalists.

The engagement is part of a broader series of consultations undertaken by the Police Service throughout the year to ensure peace and security during the electoral period.

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of the Police and stakeholders to maintaining a peaceful, transparent, and credible election.
