The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has launched Ghana’s Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, signaling a major milestone in the country’s technological transformation journey.
The policy aims to harness digital technologies to drive economic growth, improve public services, and ensure equitable access to digital resources for all Ghanaians.
Speaking at the launch in Accra, Hon. Owusu-Ekuful described digitalisation as a transformative force, declaring that access to digital tools and services is no longer a privilege but a fundamental right.
The Minister highlighted key achievements, including the deployment of a high-speed eGovernment network connecting 951 public institutions, supported by 3,500 kilometers of fiber optic cables laid in 2023. This infrastructure, she noted, is crucial for bridging the digital divide and laying the foundation for a digitally inclusive future.
The policy focuses on five core areas: entrepreneurship, digital skills, digital government, universal access, and emerging technologies. These pillars aim to strengthen Ghana’s economy, promote inclusive growth, and open up new opportunities for businesses and individuals.
“The Government is committed to ensuring that digital technologies become a powerful engine for job creation, poverty reduction, and sustainable economic growth,” Hon. Owusu-Ekuful said. “This strategy aligns with Ghana’s present and future economic needs, ensuring no one is left behind.”
She also acknowledged the support of partners like the World Bank and the Tony Blair Institute, while calling for greater private-sector investment to bridge connectivity gaps.
The Minister emphasized the importance of adaptive regulations to encourage innovation while safeguarding citizens against risks such as fraud and misinformation.
“This is our roadmap to securing a prosperous digital future for all Ghanaians,” she concluded.
The launch underscores Ghana’s ambition to position itself as a leader in Africa’s digital economy, fostering innovation and inclusion for sustainable national development.
