President-elect of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has extended significant financial and emotional support to the family of Yusif Larry, a victim of the Kasoa Election Day shooting.

Larry was tragically shot dead by suspected thugs reportedly linked to Mavis Hawa Koomson, the outgoing NPP MP for Awutu Senya East Constituency.

Representing the former president at the One Week Addua held in Mamobi near the hospital was a high-profile delegation led by Alhaji Saeed Sinare. Other notable figures included Hon. Yusif Jajah, Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar, Hon. Naa Koryoo Okunor, Alhaji Sheriff Abdul Nasir, and Mr. Stephen Agyare.

The ceremony was attended by family members, National Democratic Congress (NDC) members, and well-wishers. The National Chief Imam also graced the event, offering prayers for the deceased.

Support for the Widow and Children

President-elect Mahama has donated over GH₵85,000 to Larry’s widow and an undisclosed sum to his grieving mother. He also pledged to fund the education of Larry’s children through the tertiary level.

Demonstrating further compassion, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, brother of the president-elect, committed to providing the equivalent of Larry’s salary for four years, as though he were employed at the National Security Council, a role Larry aspired to. These funds will be invested for the benefit of Larry’s widow and children.

Support for Other Victims

Two other individuals wounded in the Election Day violence, one of whom had to undergo amputation, are also receiving medical support from the Mahama family.

This generous assistance underscores their commitment to supporting victims of election-related violence.

A Call for Justice

As investigations into the incident continue, the Mahama family’s intervention has provided much-needed relief to the grieving families.

This tragedy has spotlighted the need for measures to prevent election violence and to ensure justice for victims of such senseless acts.

The Kasoa shooting remains a somber reminder of the importance of safeguarding peace and democracy during elections.
