The state has officially withdrawn its appeal against the Court of Appeal’s ruling in the case involving Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and businessman Richard Jakpa, effectively bringing the legal battle to an end at the Supreme Court.

The case centered on the controversial €2.37 million ambulance procurement deal, in which Dr. Ato Forson now serving as Minister of Finance and Jakpa were accused of willfully causing financial loss to the state.

Prosecutors alleged that Dr. Forson had authorized letters of credit for the procurement without ensuring proper quality checks, leading to the importation of 30 defective ambulances for the National Ambulance Service.

The defense, however, argued that Dr. Forson acted within his official capacity and bore no criminal responsibility for the procurement process.

The case became a focal point of political debate, with the then-NDC Minority in Parliament condemning it as a politically motivated attack on one of their key figures.

The Court of Appeal had recently issued a ruling that raised concerns over the prosecution’s legal standing and the strength of the evidence presented. In response, the Attorney General’s office had initially sought to challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court.

However, the state has now reversed course, opting to withdraw its appeal.
