Residents of Asubuasu, a farming community in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region, have staged a peaceful protest against the activities of Fulani herdsmen, accusing them of destroying their farmlands and polluting water sources.
The demonstrators expressed frustration over the destruction of their crops by cattle belonging to the herdsmen.
They also alleged that the only source of drinking water in the community has been contaminated due to the activities of the herdsmen, making access to potable water a major challenge.
Speaking to journalists during the protest, the leader of the farmers, Mr. George Dapaah, appealed to the Mampong Regional Police Command and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene.
He called for the immediate release of three farmers who were reportedly arrested following allegations by the herdsmen.
According to Mr. Dapaah, the arrested farmers were falsely accused of killing cattle, a claim he strongly denied, stating that it was a tactic used by the herdsmen to intimidate the locals.
Other affected farmers also voiced their concerns, alleging that the herdsmen had set fire to large acres of farmland, causing significant losses.
They called on the government and security agencies to take swift action to protect their livelihoods and ensure peace in the community.
Residents have vowed to continue their advocacy until authorities address their concerns and restore order in the area.
