Traders at Akyem Oda, located in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region, have raised serious concerns over mounting waste pollution, warning of a potential cholera outbreak if urgent action is not taken.
The traders attribute the worsening sanitation crisis to the failure of Zoomlion workers to clean the municipality, reportedly due to unpaid salary arrears.
Speaking to the media, traders at the Akyem Oda main lorry station and Central Market lamented the unchecked accumulation of waste in markets, streets, lorry stations, and gutters.
They fear the situation could escalate into a health disaster, especially with cholera cases being reported in parts of the country.
Some traders also expressed frustration over continued waste levy collections, despite the lack of proper sanitation management.
They urged municipal authorities to intervene immediately to restore cleanliness and prevent a potential health crisis.
In response, the Municipal Coordinating Director for Birim Central, Mr. Haruna Amadu Zure, assured the public that the assembly is committed to addressing the waste situation.
He acknowledged the strike by Zoomlion workers but emphasized that alternative measures would be taken to clear the waste. He also urged traders and residents to maintain proper sanitation practices and avoid littering.
As concerns grow, traders and residents are hoping for swift action to prevent a possible outbreak and safeguard public health in Akyem Oda.
