A 36-year-old man identified as Dominic Afriyie, alias “GH,” has been sentenced to 120 years in prison with hard labour, alongside a life sentence, following his conviction for robbery and murder by the Kumasi High Court.
Justice Abdul Razak, who presided over the case, delivered the sentence after a seven-member jury found Afriyie guilty of the brutal killing of pharmacist and building contractor, Michael Dela Agbo Klu. The incident occurred on November 20, 2021, during a robbery at Klu’s residence in Atasemanso, Kumasi.
According to court proceedings, Afriyie broke into the victim’s home, where he stole two mobile phones, an ASUS Zenbook laptop, and an amount of GH¢1,500. He then shot the 43-year-old homeowner, resulting in his death.
The case took a turn when police, acting on intelligence, arrested Afriyie and three others on December 31, 2021. The group was intercepted in a Toyota Corolla suspected to be involved in another robbery plot in the area. A search of the vehicle revealed two pistols and a pair of single-barrel shotguns. Subsequent investigations confirmed that Afriyie had committed the Atasemanso murder alone.
Though he pleaded not guilty, the overwhelming evidence presented during the trial led to his conviction and sentencing.
Following the verdict, the Ashanti Regional Police Command, through a statement signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo, reaffirmed its commitment to tackling violent crime and ensuring public safety.
