Senior officers of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have pledged their one-month basic salary in support of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, widely known as the Mahama Cares initiative.
The contribution is aimed at bolstering national efforts to provide financial relief to vulnerable patients battling life-threatening health conditions, including cancer, stroke, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, and other critical ailments.
The announcement was made during a courtesy visit to President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, May 16, led by Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong. Speaking on behalf of the Service Commanders, Lt. Gen. Agyapong described the fund as a vital lifeline for the medically underserved in Ghana.
“We are moved by the purpose of this fund, especially knowing it will assist individuals suffering from serious illnesses like cancer, kidney disease, and stroke,” he said. “In light of this, the leadership of the Armed Forces has unanimously decided to donate our one-month basic salary to support this noble cause.”
President Mahama, who is championing the Mahama Cares initiative, expressed profound gratitude to the military leadership for their solidarity and compassion.
“This gesture speaks volumes about your commitment to the nation beyond the call of duty,” the President said. “You are not just defenders of our borders; you are patriots with empathy and humanity. On behalf of the people of Ghana, I thank you deeply for this meaningful support.”
The Mahama Cares Medical Trust Fund was recently launched to provide timely financial assistance to Ghanaians facing overwhelming medical expenses, particularly those who cannot afford specialized care.
The fund has since received endorsements from various stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, civil society organizations, and now the armed forces.
