A major crackdown on illegal mining activities in the Atabokaa community of the Bodi District has led to the arrest of six individuals, including two Chinese nationals and four Ghanaians, following a joint security operation.

The suspects were apprehended during a coordinated effort between the Regional Operations Team, the Regional Formed Police Unit (FPU), and representatives from the National Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), under the leadership of the Western North Regional Security Coordinator.

The operation was launched after intelligence gathered by a concerned citizen revealed ongoing illegal mining (galamsey) activities in the area.

The suspects were arraigned before court on Monday, May 19, 2025 and have since been remanded into custody to assist with further investigations.

In connection with the case, the Chief of Atabokaa and a galamsey kingpin have been invited to appear before the Regional Police CID today, May 20, 2025, to assist in the ongoing investigation. The two are believed to have played key roles in facilitating the illegal mining operations.

According to the individual who filed the initial complaint and played a key role in gathering intelligence, the tip-off was confirmed through independent investigations, prompting collaboration with law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Authorities have assured the public of their continued commitment to combating illegal mining activities across the region, and urge residents to report any suspicious activities to aid in the fight against galamsey.
