Former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has formally announced his intention to contest the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a post on his official pages on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Dr Adutwum stated his readiness to lead the party, pending the official opening of nominations.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the Flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he wrote.

His declaration comes just a day after the NPP announced that it will hold its presidential primaries on 31 January 2026 to select a flag bearer for the 2028 elections.

The date was approved during a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council held on Tuesday, 17 June 2025.

NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, confirmed that the decision is in line with the party’s constitution and does not require any amendments.

The upcoming race is expected to be hotly contested, with several prominent party figures tipped to join the competition.

These include Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central. Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Boakye Agyarko, founding NPP member and former Energy Minister.

The party’s executives have pledged to ensure a transparent and credible process. Detailed guidelines on nominations, campaign activities, and a code of conduct for aspirants are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
