The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has apprehended about 50 Nigerian nationals in a special operation carried out in the early hours of Thursday, July 24, 2025, at McCarthy Hills in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
According to a press statement signed by M. Amoako-Atta, APR, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration and Head of Public Affairs, the operation was intelligence-led and targeted foreign nationals suspected of residing in the country illegally. It also forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on human trafficking and cybercrime activities within local communities.
Preliminary findings indicate that some of the individuals arrested were victims of trafficking who had been brought into Ghana under false pretenses and later forced into cyber fraud by their facilitators.
Among those taken into custody is the landlord of the property where the suspects were housed and allegedly engaged in illicit cyber activities. GIS officials say the facility was being used as a base for operations that potentially span multiple countries in the sub-region.
“The Ghana Immigration Service acted swiftly on credible intelligence and executed a targeted operation at McCarthy Hills. About 50 Nigerians have been picked up so far, including the landlord of the apartment where the alleged illegality was taking place,” the statement noted.
The GIS further assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that more details will be shared as the situation develops.
It also reiterated its commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to combat cross-border crimes, especially those involving trafficking and exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
The Service has urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities to help preserve national security and public safety.
