Police in the Savelugu District have arrested three men in connection with the possession of restricted pharmaceutical drugs and an unlicensed firearm, in violation of Section 102 of the Pharmacy Council Act, 2013 (Act 857) and Section 192 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The suspects — Jabuni S. Mohammed, 29, a businessman from Walewale; Alidu Abdul Samed, 20, a tailor from Tamale; and Abdul Aziz, 29, a kente weaver also from Tamale — were apprehended in the early hours of Sunday, August 3, 2025, near Diare, close to Savelugu.

According to police reports, at about 2:20 a.m., officers returning from a night patrol on the Tamale–Bolgatanga road intercepted a Nissan Hardbody pickup with registration number GN 2812–20, driven by suspect Jabuni S. Mohammed. The vehicle, which was heading toward Tamale from Walewale, was flagged at the Diare Police checkpoint but failed to stop, prompting suspicion.

Police patrol teams pursued the vehicle and eventually located it after the driver abandoned it in a nearby bush. The suspect was arrested after a brief manhunt. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 1,399 blister packs of Tafrodol 120mg, a restricted medication, hidden in the deflated spare tyre.

Additionally, a pistol with serial number CA161M loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition was retrieved from the headrest compartment.

During preliminary interrogation, Jabuni disclosed that he had acquired the drugs on behalf of two accomplices — Alidu Abdul Samed and Abdul Aziz — who had requested the purchase and were en route from Tamale to collect them.

Acting on this information, officers mounted surveillance and arrested the pair upon arrival on an unregistered Lojia motorbike. All three were taken into custody for further investigation.

The police have since impounded the Nissan Hardbody pickup and the unregistered motorbike. The 1,399 blister packs of Tafrodol, along with the loaded pistol and ammunition, have been secured as exhibits.

In a follow-up operation, suspect Jabuni led officers to a nearby bush, close to a stream, where he had discarded two black polythene bags containing empty boxes of the restricted drugs.

The exhibits had been carefully removed from their original packaging and concealed in the spare tyre compartment.

The suspects remain in custody and are expected to be arraigned before court on Monday, August 4, 2025.
