President John Dramani Mahama has paid a visit to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra to console victims receiving treatment following the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium.
Accompanied by Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson, President Mahama received firsthand briefings from medical officials on the condition of the injured and the ongoing response efforts.
The devastating incident has claimed the lives of at least six people, while 12 remain in critical condition, including five in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) attributes the stampede to the overwhelming number of young Ghanaians who thronged the stadium in a desperate bid to secure enlistment, leading to intense pushing and jostling at the entry points.
Security personnel have cordoned off the area, with military officers blocking major roads leading to the stadium to maintain order and support rescue operations. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital morgue.
The incident occurred amid an extended recruitment period announced by the GAF, which had been extended by one week following technical challenges on the recruitment portal.
