A Juaboso District Court has remanded a man described by police as a notorious armed robbery suspect with links to a shrine, following a violent attack on miners at Sefwi-Antobia in the Western North Region.

The suspect, Victor Biney, alias Abeiku, who is already standing trial at the Bibiani Circuit Court for multiple robberies and a murder case, was arrested after a police tracking operation led officers to his shrine at Attakrom, a cottage community near Juaboso.

According to police reports, on 17 November 2025, at about 2:00 a.m., seven face-masked young men armed with pump-action and single-barrel guns stormed a mining site near Antobia. The miners, including complainant Alex Owusu, were subjected to severe beatings with cutlasses.

The attackers made away with quantities of gold concentrate, popularly known as “black”, as well as several mobile phones.

Three of the robbers were reportedly wearing smocks, one of which was decorated with talismans, while another was dressed in a military camouflage shirt. The miners told police they could easily identify the outfits when seen.

Following the report at 3:30 a.m., police, with the help of a private cyber expert, tracked one of the stolen phones to the shrine of Victor Biney. Though he was absent at the time of the raid, a search conducted in the presence of witnesses led to the discovery of items believed to be linked to the robbery.

Police retrieved a military camouflage shirt, a pair of handcuffs, two cutlasses, a single-barrel gun, forehead flashlights, seventeen AAA live cartridges, five smocks, a plastic basin containing particles of gold concentrate, mercury, a pump-action gun butt, and other materials.

On the officers’ return journey, they encountered and arrested the suspect. At the station, Victor Biney allegedly admitted ownership of the firearms, handcuffs, smocks, cartridges, camouflage shirt, cutlasses, and several other recovered items.

The victims later identified three flashlights, mercury, gold concentrate particles, three of the smocks, and the camouflage shirt as items used or taken during the robbery attack.

Biney was subsequently arraigned before the Juaboso District Court, where he was remanded into police custody to reappear on 8 December 2025.

Police say strenuous and relentless efforts are underway to arrest the remaining six accomplices who fled with the stolen items.
