Civil society group Anchoring Democracy Advocacy Movement Ghana (ADAM-GH) has cautioned Ghanaians against urging President John Mahama to pursue an unconstitutional third term, warning that such pressure could threaten the nation’s democratic stability.

In a statement on November 23, 2025, Executive Secretary Azubila Emmanuel Salam said Mahama has already rejected any third-term discussion and emphasized that the NDC has capable leaders ready to continue the party’s development agenda.

ADAM-GH cited examples from Africa, like Guinea, Gabon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Niger, and Zimbabwe, where attempts to extend presidential tenure triggered coups or political unrest.

The organisation warned that meddling with constitutional term limits weakens institutions and risks instability.

Salam stressed that Mahama’s legacy is secure, and Ghana’s future leadership can rely on competent successors while he provides guidance as a seasoned statesman.

Ghana, in a continent often shaken by military coups, must avoid any actions that could provoke similar events here,” the statement read.
