There was a total standoff and confusion at Weija Junction, this morning among drivers who ply their trade on the Accra-Kasoa Highway and those from Oblogo stretch because the traffic lights at the junction was not functioning.

This standoff and confusion broke into scuffle among drivers because none of them was patient enough to allow the other go first.

While some drivers were seen turning off their vehicle engines in the middle of the road to trade blows with each other, others engaged in insults.

The confusion lasted more than thirty [30] minutes as passengers were left helpless with no law enforcement officers to instil discipline.

One of the drivers, a Sprinter bus driver, Mr Samuel Nyame, who spoke with the Republic Press said the traffic lights have not been functioning for some time now and so they always experience this kind of confusion and standoff.

“Three days ago, there was a head-on collision here (Weija Junction) leaving the two drivers seriously injured.

Anytime I get to the junction, I panic because anybody can hit you with his or her vehicle”. He said

According to him, pedestrians and motor riders crossing to the other side of the road are the worse victims.

He appealed to the Highway authorities and the police to immediately restore order at the junction.

Checks by the Republic Press indicate that the Traffic lights at the Weija Junction are not the only faulty traffic lights in the city. There are several others in the capital city which are also not working.

This development has led to increase in road crashes in the capital city and other city centers in the country.
