A total of eight communities along the coastal belt in the Greater Accra Region are appealing to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to immediately come to their aid to provide shelter and food for over 300 people who have been displaced by tidal waves.

These communities are Chorkor, Shiabu, Gbegbeisee, part of Glefe, Tetegu, Bortianor, Oshiyie and Kokrobite where over 100 houses along the shore have been washed away by the tidal waves.

The effect of the tidal waves on communities along the coast has rendered some residents homeless for the past two months.

The tidal waves according to some residents washed close to 10 houses on daily basis, a situation they say started in August 2021.

Some of the residents who spoke to the Republic Press said even though the issue of tidal waves date back in the decade the recent havoc is more distractive.

Among these eight communities, Gbegbeisee and Glefe a suburb of Dansoman are the most affected areas as local resorts along the beach have been destroyed by tidal waves.

Death

According to some residents, the phenomenon has resulted in fatal accidents with people including children losing their lives after the structures they slept in, collapsed on them.

According to residents at the Dansoman Gbegbeisee, lives have been lost in a similar situation in recent times because the ongoing Sea Defense project along that stretch of the coast has stalled because the local fishermen begged for a landing beach for their canoes.

A Community Leader, Asafoatse Dun Klante who spoke to the paper said all the structures along the beach have either collapsed or have their foundations washed away as a result of the tidal waves, making them death traps for residents who live in them. This includes a mosque, which is now a few meters away from the sea.

A fisherman, Mr. Emmanuel Lamptey who lives in the area told the Republic Press that last month (August) three children lost their lives when the structure they slept in collapsed at dawn due to the tidal waves.

“The sea waves destroyed structures at dawn, killing three children sleeping in it. They were aged 5, 10 and 19,” Mr. Lamptey stated.

Meanwhile the Chief executive Officer of Overmass Resort, Mr. Benjamin Commey blamed the local fishermen for the current happenings at the popular Dansoman beach because, they appealed to the Member of Parliament in the area, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful to make the place a landing beach.

Mr. Commey said he has invested all his life time saving on the resort and for the past few months the waves have been distractive meanwhile those local fishermen have relocated their canoes to Chorkor and other landing beaches.

He said, another local resort, Little Paradise, which has operated at the Dansoman Beach for the past 15 years is gradually been washed away by the tidal waves.

Residents say they have raised concerns many times, but they are yet to receive answers to the issues raised.

A visit to the Assembly Member for Shiabu Electoral Area, Nii Lantei Lamptey, said he has done everything humanly possible for the assembly and the Coastal Development Authority to come to their aid but to no avail.
