The Ghana Commission for UNESCO has held an orientation session with students of Accra Technical Training Centre (ATTC) on Thursday 14th October 2021.
The outreach programme was an opportunity for the team (Confidence Chika Nwauzor, Kofi Kwakye Takyi, and Moses J. Y. Gemeh) from the Commission to expose students to all that UNESCO Club stands for plus the roles of club members.
In the first session, Mr Kofi Kwakye spoke about what the SDGs are, their importance to the world and our responsibilities as citizens of the world to reach these goals by 2030 and UNESCO’s responsibility to make it happen.
Most importantly, the UNESCO Club members promised to use their current and future expertise to find solutions to some of the SDGs in their school community.
During the second session Mr. Gemeh centred the discussions on what UNESCO is, the functions of UNESCO, ATTC as a partner of UNESCO, what is a UNESCO Club and its aims, their formation, and club activities.
In the presentation, students welcomed the view that as UNESCO Club members, their activities should revolve around peace and human rights, intercultural understanding, citizenship education, respect for diversity and tolerance, inclusiveness, climate change, biodiversity, disaster risk reduction, sustainable consumption, and poverty eradication.
Nii, a First-Year Electronics student, mentioned that starting a UNESCO Club at ATTC is an important exercise.
“…because it would help UNESCO Club members of ATTC to use the ideals of UNESCO such as tolerance and peace to change the bad perception people have about technical students in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools since they would be taught more about tolerance and peace….” Nii stated
The team appreciated Mr Arko Dometey, the principal of ATTC, Mr Robert Asante, his Vice-Principal (Domestic), the entire teaching staff and the UNESCO Club Coordinator for ATTC, Mrs Theresa Amarquaye, for their support and more significantly, taking care of the trees that were jointly planted during the Green Ghana Project on 11 June 2021.
