The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has challenged the people of Greater Accra Region to make ‘Operation Clean your Frontage,’ work to achieve the vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa before the end of his tenure.
The President re-echoed the need to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa on Friday, October 22, 2021, at the Independence Square when he launched the ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ under the auspices of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), various ministries and with support from the private sector.
The initiative, President Akufo-Addo said is an agenda that will mobilise and empower urban cities to practically and sustainably respond to the region’s waste management and sanitation challenges.
He said the ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage,’ is to create opportunities for sustainable and economic growth in the context of enhanced security, clean and green environment, public private partnerships and good urban governance.
“For us to achieve this feat, we need attitudinal and behavioural change and a conscious effort as adopted by Greater Accra RCC under the leadership of the Mr. Henry Quartey, the Greater Accra Regional Minister,” he stated.
The Executive Chairman of Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong said the private sector and Zoomlion Ghana Limited were in full support of the initiative, adding that the giant waste management company has released logistics and equipment in relation to the ‘Accra Must Work Campaign’ to maximise impact.
Dr. Siaw said in addition to providing personnel, the company is providing about 85 compactors, 1000 Tricycles and 100,000 waste bins to support the campaign.
“I would like to encourage all Ghanaians to take advantage of this laudable initiative to clean their frontage to ensure that we in our own small ways, also play our parts in making Ghana clean and healthy country,” he stated
In outlining the nature of the ‘Operation Clean your Frontage’ initiative, the Greater Accra Regional, Mr Henry Quartey, said the agenda was in response to President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa..
Mr Quartey said one of the interventions of the agenda “Let’s Make Greater Accra Work” is Operation Clean Your Frontage” campaign which would make it mandatory for property owners of residential, private and public institutions and the citizenry to clean and green their frontage and all open spaces around their property.
He added that some of the strategic interventions under the ‘Operation Clean your Frontage’ campaign includes by-laws on cleaning of the frontage of premises formulated and gazetted, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) deployment of systematic approach to sensitize residents, corporate organizations and community members on their roles and responsibilities in waste management.
In addition, assemblies would create extensive awareness on sanitation and cleaning by-laws and commit to enforcing these laws, deployment of City Response Team, evacuation of accumulated refuse at sanitary sites and other locations, transfer stations in MMDAs as well as daily sweeping of streets, curbs, walkways, and open spaces among others.
Mr. Quartey said the expected short-term and long-term initiatives will be first and foremost, cleaner and more hygienic environments, reducing pest infestations, protecting the environment and the health of the citizenry not forgetting clean air and clean streets and walkways.
