As part of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr. Henry Quartey has said plans are far advanced to relocate Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers from their current place to Afienya.

According to the Minister, the move is in line with the Regional Coordinating Council’s (RCC) request to relocate them to Afienya under the Industrial Enclave and Urban Renewal project.

He said the RCC on behalf of the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, through the Lands Commission has requested for 1000 acres of land which will be developed into an Automobile Hub for them so they relocate.

“When that Industrial Enclave and Urban Renewal project is completed, going forward, automobile services and marketing value chain trade will be restricted to the new automobile hub and not in the city centers,” he stated.

Speaking at the launch of “Operation Clean your Frontage,” last Friday October 22, 2021, the Minister said these actions are deliberately thought-out programmes instituted by the RCC and the government to ensure the President’s bigger vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

“I took over as the Regional Minister, we started clearing traders on the streets along the Madina Zongo Junction to ensure free flow of traffic and urban mobility and also saved lives by assisting pedestrians to utilise the overhead bridges which was abandoned causing accidents.” Mr. Quartey said

He added that the RCC again cleared traders from the median along the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue to facilitate greening of the median and enhance flow of traffic.

“We have cleared Scrap Dealers from the back of the Beyeeman Cold Store to reduce desilting of the major Odaw drains and allow M/S Dredge Masters to carry on with their work,” he stated.

He said after successfully relocating the bulk onion sellers from Agbogbloshie to Adjen Kotoku, they themselves attest to the fact that they are now at a better place with improved facilities.

The minister said the former Agbogbloshie area is now available to the government to use to establish more socially beneficial projects including a hospital under Agenda 111.

“This is phase one of the decongestion of the Agbogbloshie area, phase two will involve moving the bulk Yam and Tomato sellers while phase three will deal with moving the Sodom and Gomorrah settlers. We intend to move all bulk breaking businesses to other places within the city,” he revealed.
