Minister for Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has asked officials of the Electricity company of Ghana to work at reducing the leakages and the slippages in its revenue collection management system.

Dr. Prempeh bemoaned the situation where increasingly the company suffer about 25% of losses in terms of revenue.

Speaking during a call by officials of the company to discuss matters that bothered on increasing the efficiency of the company, the minister said government acknowledges the commercial bottlenecks hindering the company’s ability to deliver quality, reliable and safe electricity for Ghanaians

Dr. Prempeh said for the first time Government has cleared all its debts up to date as part of efforts at making the company economically viable and sustainable. “In the distribution business of the energy subsector, inherent losses, specifically technical and commercial are accepted.

However, it is the continuous rise of such losses which has become the bane of this company” he said

Dr. Prempeh asked the company to consolidate the efforts of the revenue protection taskforce. This he says could be done through beefing up the number of personnel deployed to seal the loopholes in the system. “If we do not work collectively to stop these illegalities, there will come a time where the company may not have the capacity to employ all of you” he said

The Manhyia South MP further expressed the hope that ECG has the potential to be viable and turn its fortunes around to become one of the best distribution companies in Africa. “Collectively we must be focused on this goal. To be able to do this, vigilance must be the watchword” he noted
