The Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Very Rev. Edward Ofori Donkor, has said the church in Ghana has failed in it quest of instilling discipline and moral values in society.
The Bishop said it is very worrying that the church has also lost it voice in the fight against the LGBT+ and now hiding behind the bill in presented Parliament to determine the fate of Ghana.
“Instead of the church being the forefront of fighting against the legalisation of LGBT+ rather base their hope on the bill presented in Parliament as if when the bill is passed, it will stop homosexuals or lesbians from practising.” he stated.
“One thing that we must know is that armed robbery is a crime against the state but the laws have not stopped it. What is the guarantee that if the anti LGBT+ law is passed it will stop their operations?
The man of God made this revelation at the launch of Youth For Christ Ghana (YFC) 55th anniversary celebrations held in Accra under the theme ‘Thus Far Has The Lord Brought Us.’
“We must do something about the youth of the country by going out there to appeal to their conscience and take up the challenge.” He added
He said the church must develop programmes that is geared towards youth employment, incentives and inductive programmes and if these are not done, the youth would be lost in the church.
In launching their 55 years of impacting society, the chairman for the occasion and one-time member, Professor Benjamin Abotchie Ntreh said 50 years ago, the youth were eager to associate with the church because of proper moral values but now the church is rather the cause.
” I am who I am today because of YFC and the values it instilled in me but rather today’s youth are moving away from the church because the church has lost it values.” Prof. Ntreh said
Background for YFC
Trumpeting their achievements over the past 55 years, the National Director of YFC, Mr. Jackson Fiifi Mensah, said the group have doubled it target to 21,810 of young people across the country with 8, 639 surrendered their lives to God.
Mr. Mensah said the 8, 639 who surrendered their lives to God exceeded their target of 700 and again exceeded the target for youth under discipleship by over
5,000 in 104 schools as 87 chaplains were trained and motivated towards the achievement in 2021.
“We have had more partnerships with some organisations to reach out to young people, trained more volunteers to support the ministry in the schools and communities.
