Residents of Adzebui, a suburb of Dzemeni in South-Dayi District in the Volta-region are pleading with authorities to provide them with community health workers.
The residents said since the completion of the clinic in 2016, no health worker has step foot in the facility to attend to any patient.
Pregnant women and other members of the community in need of urgent health care have to travel long distances on motorbikes to access health care in nearby communities like Tongor-Dzemeni.
One of the opinion leaders of the community, Mr. Amenyo Isaac is calling on the government to tend its attention on them since they are not asking too much.
“We are about 500 in this community, we lack every basic amenity you can think of, no drinking water, basic school or even light. Now we have a clinic, since 2016 that this clinic was completed, we followed up with the Assembly member but till now we do not have a single nurse here. Are we asking too much?”
According to the Assembly member of the Adzebui electoral area, Mr. John Abostigelli, “all efforts to get the facility in use yielded no result”.
Although the previous John Mahama-led administration tried to extend electricity to the community, the project ceased after the government left office.
The community also has no drinking water or basic school. This has compelled the students to trek long distances to nearby schools.
According to one of the pupils, Esther Tito, she “sometimes leave home by 7am and get to school when is first break, that is around 11am”.
The community members who are largely cassava farmers produce large quantities of cassava dough but has since not had a grinding machine. The situation also forces the farmers to increase the price of the cassava dough as they had to pay for the transportation of the cassava to nearby communities before grinding the cassava into cassava dough.
The community through community labour activities has managed to keep the place tidy.
