Mr George Ayisi, Public Relations Officer for the Greater Accra National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has indicated that 17 districts in the Greater Accra Region will benefit from a drainage development project as part of efforts to combat flooding in the capital.
This is part of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project for Ghana, which aims to improve flood risk management and waste management in the region’s Odaw River Basin and improve access to basic infrastructure and services in target Odaw River Basin communities.
The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project for Ghana consists of five components, including measures for climate-resilient drainage and flood protection.
Led by the Department of Works and Housing (MWH), the project aims to develop sustainable flood risk management capacity and mitigate flood risk for a 10-year flood in the Odaw River Basin.
Parts of Greater Accra have been hit by severe flooding since the rains began.
Recently, even after a brief downpour, it was found that severe flooding affected most areas including the N1, mainly the Tema highway and Kasoa road, Kaneshie and parts of the Accra-Nsawam road.
Mr George Ayisi assured in an interview that the project will be a holistic approach to deal with the floods in Accra.
According to him, a consultant had already engaged the directors of NADMO, while they have also made their contributions and look forward to the release of funds to begin work.
He said there will be resettlement and compensation for starting the project.
Meanwhile, Mr George Ayisi said the project should see the light of day by 2025.
