Retired Auditor General, Daniel Yao Domelevo has revealed that prior to his appointment as the Auditor General in 2016, president Akufo-Addo called him on phone to encourage him to accept the appointment after his initial hesitation.
He said when he was appointed by then President John Dramani Mahama after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had lost the 2016 elections, he was unwilling to take up the role.
Mr Domelevo was appointed on December 23, 2016 to replace Richard Quartei Quartey, who had retired from public service.
But there was controversy surrounding his appointment as a result of the fact that he was going to serve under a new government.
Since the Akufo-Addo-led government took office in 2017, there has been seeming tension between Mr Domelevo and the Audit Service Board, in particular.
In 2020, Mr Domelevo was entangled in a tussle with the Office of the President on his compulsory leave.
When Mr Domelevo resumed from his compulsory leave on Wednesday, March 3,2021, he was asked to proceed on retirement by the government.
“The attention of the President of the Republic has been drawn to records and documents made available to the Office by the Audit Service , that indicate that your date of birth is 1st June 1960 and that in accordance with article 199(1) of the Constitution , your date of retirement as Auditor General was 1st June 2020.
Based on this information the President is of the view that you have formally left office. Mr Johnson Akuamoa-Asiedu will continue to act as Auditor General until the President appoints a substantive Auditor General.”
At a thanksgiving service at the Christ The King Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 10, Mr Domelevo recounted how he received a phone call from then Manhyia South MP-elect Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh to speak to then President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo.
“So, Nana Akufo-Addo encouraged me that ‘Go and take the job’,” he told friends and family at the service.
He, therefore, thanked the president for the opportunity to serve under him.
He also thanked Mr Dramani Mahama for appointing him.
